The reveal lies not in what they become, but in how they became what they are. The backstory is rarely worked out in advance, so I get to go on the same journey as the readers, preceding them by mere days, narrating over my shoulder: “Aha! ” None of which is to say that the old, established characters aren’t essential. Without them, Doonesbury would flap around, unfocused and flimsy. D. and Joanie and their long histories give the strip ballast, a sense of cumulative weight and purpose.
