Epicurus taught just enjoy yourself. There is nothing else to do. If you die, there is nothing you can do about it. If there is going to be a hereafter, oh so good; you will be that much ahead. But that was the philosophy of Epicurus, you know, and they were Epicureans. " This was the time of Augustus, you see. This was the very time that Christ was born, and anybody who believed anything was a Jew. The reason he uses Apelles is that Apelles was a famous actor. Everybody was wild about Apelles because he was a clever actor.

Notice this is purgatory. He recognizes that it's lawless. It's not in the scripture, and it's uncertain. You can't be sure about purgatory. And it has people howling. " Then it goes on: -'tis too horrible! The weariest and most loathed worldly life That age, ache, penury, and imprisonment Can lay on nature is a paradise To what we fear of death. It's the worst thing you can possibly think of. So this is what scares the daylights out of him, and this is what he was worried about. What about answering these questions?

Why? Because there were great gaps. People asked questions, and there was no answer they could get from the Bible. Why not? Because they had removed all those parts. It all comes back to us now in these later documents, you see, what he was trying to supplant. But that isn't the big thing now; that isn't the thing we value the Pearl of Great Price for. What is this big brouhaha, the scientific one, that has come forth? It burst out with particular fury in 1859 and after. That's when The Origin of the Species was published, and from then on to this very day, that has been the big issue.
